Last night, much to my surprise, I was able to stay awake long enough to watch an entire episode of SNL. As someone who was just old enough in 1975 to appreciate the humor and talent of the original Saturday Night Live shows, that's saying a lot. Okay... so I took a little nap earlier in the evening... sue me.
I watched because I wanted to see Larry David of Seinfeld and Curb your Enthusiasm fame host the show. If you missed it, his Bern Your Enthusiasm skit was hilarious and well worth staying up for but getting to see, The 1975, perform their American debut was an interesting little side salad that I'm glad I didn't miss. Mostly because it was fun to read all of the social media comments about them this morning.
Stepping back to last night for a moment, I have to tell you that I've always been open to new and alternative types of music. My hubby has not. So... for a bit of reference as to what the average middle aged man might think of them I'll tell you that my husband had dozed off before the show began but during The 1975's first song, The Sound, he opened his eyes for a moment and said, "WTF is that?"
I have to admit, at first, I was trying to open-mindedly make heads or tails out of the performance. There was a lot of energy going on and it was rather late for me but once I wrapped my head around it, I liked it.
And just like my husband and I, the social media commentators I saw this morning seemed to either completely LOVE or absolutely HATE the group.
I saw comments that called the British Indie band, The 1975, fresh, modern and retro? So which is it? Is their sound modern or retro?
The lead singer was compared to both Jim Morrison of the Doors and Michael Hutchence of INXS.
Someone commented that they thought the song, The Sound, sounded exactly like something Prince did back in the day.
I have to admit to hearing a definite "David-Bowie-Fame-ish" riff while listening to, Love Me, their second selection of the evening.
Some people who commented thought the lead singer, Matt Healy, was trying too hard, others thought he was kind of insane, while others, fell deeply in love with him.
Some folks were confused by the name of the band, The 1975, saying their sound was more reminiscent of the 80's.
I think any group that could inspire so many varied and strong emotions from people is definitely going to make a large splash in the days and years to come. I look forward to seeing more from them.
The 1975 - Love Me (Same Song but not the Saturday Night Live Performance)
Have a listen and look-see at The 1975 singing Love Me.
Is the Sound Modern or Retro?
So... Here's the debate part. Did you see the show? What did you think? Is the band, The 1975, retro cool or ultra modern and fresh? Do you think they're going to be around for a while or was SNL their one and only big hurrah?
Share your thoughts in the comments. We'd love to hear from you.
